Roderick Campbell a.k.a. Ahab is an intimidating mutant researcher contracted by the Sentinel Services with a morally dubious mission which has yet to be revealed.

AceShowbiz - A new face has been added to the cast of FOX's upcoming "X-Men"-related series "The Gifted". Garret Dillahunt ("12 Years a Slave") is set to recur on the series, playing villainous Roderick Campbell a.k.a. Ahab.

According to Deadline, Ahab is a mutant researcher contracted by the Sentinel Services. Professorial, intense and intimidating, Dr. Campbell has a morally dubious mission yet to be revealed.

In the comics, the character is depicted as a psychologist and acquaintance of Moira McTaggart. Created by Walt Simonson and Jackson Guice, Campbell made his first appearance in "Fantastic Four Annual" #23 in July of 1990. He discovered that in the alternate future of Earth-811 ("X-Men: Days of Future Past"), ruled by Apocalypse, he became the evil mutant-hunter known as Ahab. To change his fate, Campbell later created an army of mutant trackers called the Hounds which ironically resulted in the undesired future coming true.

Fans assume that "The Gifted" will feature Campbell as his alternate future counterpart, Ahab. His "morally dubious mission" is most likely referring to Ahab's goal of putting mutants in internment camps.

Besides "12 Years a Slave", Dillahunt's credits include "Raising Hope", "Hand of God" and "Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles". The actor also starred in recurring roles on "Justified", "The 4400" and "ER". Dillahunt is recurring as Dr. Jody Kimball-Kinney on "The Mindy Project".

"The Gifted" tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Matt Nix writes the script while Bryan Singer directs the pilot. Nix and Singer also serve as executive producers alongside Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

Starring Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Jamie Chung, Emma Dummont, Sean Teale, Blair Redford and Coby Bell, "The Gifted" will premiere on Monday, October 2 at 9 P.M. on FOX.
