The 43-year-old actor is reportedly nearing a deal to play a lead role in the third season of 'True Detective'.

AceShowbiz - Mahershala Ali is reportedly eyed to play a lead role in the new season of "True Detective". While discussions are underway with the star of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1", his deal is not in place yet. Insiders, however, are confident that it will.

"True Detective" season 3 has not been greenlit yet either, but given the fact that the show is one of the crown jewels in HBO's programming lineup, insiders tell Tracking Board that it's definitely expected to return.

Plot details for the third season of "True Detective" are being kept under wraps, so no word on the character Mahershala will be playing. Should a deal close, the series would serve as Mahershala's return to television following stellar turns on Netflix's "House of Cards" and "Luke Cage".

Following poor critical response for the second season of "True Detective", HBO had reportedly been looking to make a change in the way the show was run and presented Nic Pizzolatto with a number of options, including working with a staff of writers and having a new showrunner come on board.
