The historical series is set to introduce Rhys-Meyers' Headmund, a worthy opponent to Ragnar Lodbrok's son Ivar the Boneless, in next week's episode.

AceShowbiz - "Vikings" will finally introduce Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' character Headmund in the season 4 finale. But the questions are "Who is Headmund?" and "How will his arrival affect the other characters in the future season?"
Series creator Michael Hirst tells Entertainment Weekly about how he came up with Rhys-Meyers' character Headmund. He says, "I was looking at the history books, and I came across this warrior bishops."
Hirst continues, "The antecedents of the Knights Templar: these are people who were absolutely religious, yet they put on armor and they fought." He adds, "They were crazy! They believed totally in Christianity and the message, and yet, on the battlefield, they were totally berserk."
The creator also says that Rhys-Meyers' character Headmund will probably be up against Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh). However, it seems like the encounter won't occur until next season, considering the character's first appearance in the last episode of season four.
"He's a man of Wessex, and he's gonna come in as a worthy opponent to Ivar. His whole life is about deeply passionate commitments. He's a wild card who happens to be [played] by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, who is himself kind of a wild card!" says Hirst.
Talking about bringing Rhys-Meyers to the series, Hirst says, "Johnny is just perfect for this crazed, religiously obsessed guy, who is also a sinner. He's a passionate guy, drawn towards women. He sins, and then when he sins, he punishes himself."
"Vikings" season 4 finale titled "The Reckoning" airs on Wednesday, February 1 at 9 P.M. on History.
