Rebecca Ferguson Says She Will Perform at Donald Trump's Inauguration Under One Condition

The British singer has been invited to perform at the upcoming ceremony, and says that she will accept the invitation if she can sing a controversial song about racism.

The 30-year-old singer took to Twitter on Monday, January 2 to say that she would accept the invitation if she's allowed to perform "Strange Fruit" during the ceremony to be held on January 20.

"I've been asked and this is my answer," Ferguson wrote on the social media. "If you allow me to sing 'strange fruit'," the runner-up of the seventh series of "The X Factor" continued. "A song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial."

"A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States," the British singer added. "A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington. Best Rebecca X."

"Strange Fruit" has significant meaning to many Americans. Most famously performed by jazz legend %cBillie Holiday%, the song is about protesting racism in the United States. Written in 1937 by Abel Meeropol, a New York City teacher, the lyrics discuss the horrors of lynching African Americans in the Deep South at the time of writing.

The song has since been recorded and performed by dozens of big names, from %cHerbie Hancock% and %cMarcus Miller% to %cNina Simone%.
