Elton John delivered an emotional tribute to George Michael during his Las Vegas show. The 69-year-old singer opened his series of New Year's concerts on Wednesday, December 28 with a performance of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me".
During Elton's performance, a picture of George was projected in the background. Back in 1990, the pair memorably performed the song together in a live cover version, which reached number one in both the U.K. and the U.S.
Elton broke down in tears while telling the audience, "I only wish George was here to sing it with me."
A concertgoer named Chris Stacey told Daily Mail, "There were thousands of us in tears and it was very emotional. Elton had sung a song in memory of John Lennon when he spoke about George Michael. After he sang for George, he turned his back on the audience and was shaking and looked like he was crying."
"I was in tears and so was everyone around me," Chris continued, "He received a standing ovation and had to be consoled by a band member before beginning the rest of the show. There wasn't a dry eye in the house."
Elton is expected to perform at the funeral of George, which is set to be held at Highgate cemetery in London. Rumor has it, he is also considering plans to hold a memorial concert for the Wham! singer along with Bob Geldof and Mariah Carey.
