Series executive producer Michael Peterson says that Sully comes back when Brennan is emotionally unbalanced, causing a rift in her relationship with her husband Booth.

"Bones" is a week away from its final season and it seems that there will be some tension between Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel). Causing the drama is the return of Brennan's ex-boyfriend, Tim "Sully" Sullivan (Eddie McClintock).
Series executive producer Michael Peterson told TVLine, "He (Sully) comes back at a time in Brennan's life when she is emotionally unbalanced." He added, "She and Booth are going through a very difficult time, so it's a strange time for this love from the past to show up. And it's going to have some slight reverberations. I'll be curious to see what the fans think."
Sully was previously seen in season 2 when he was still dating Brennan. Sully wanted to live his life to the fullest after losing his FBI partner. He then asked Brennan to sail with him to the Caribbean in a boat he named after her but unfortunately, Brennan declined the offer and they ended up parting ways after that.
"Bones" also stars Michaela Conlin as Angela Montenegro, Tamara Taylor as Dr. Camille Saroyan, T.J. Thyne as Dr. Jack Hodgins and John Boyd as James Aubrey.
The 12th and final season of "Bones" premieres on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 9 P.M. ET on FOX.
