MTV has renewed 'Scream' TV series for a third season consisting of six new episodes that will premiere next year.

Beware of another serial killer in Lakewood! MTV has renewed "Scream" for a third season, but there's a catch. The upcoming season will be shortened, consisting of only six episodes instead of ten episodes like the first two seasons.
The series inspired by Wes Craven's slasher movie franchise will also have a new showrunner as Michael Gans and Richard Register are not returning for the third season. Gans and Register replaced original showrunners Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia who stepped down after the first season. The replacement for season 3 has not been announced.
Details regarding the cast, production start date and the storyline are not available yet.
While waiting for the third season premiere in 2017, fans will be treated to a two-hour "Scream" Halloween special which airs Tuesday, October 18 at 9/8c on MTV. In it, Emma and the gang are trapped in a haunted house in Shallow Grove Island, where a killer is seemingly combining an old murder mystery legend from the island with the Brandon James one.
The special will plant seeds for season 3, as teased in a recently released trailer. Willa Fitzgerald, John Karna, Santiago Segura and Bex Taylor-Klaus star in the two-hour special.
