The psychological thriller starring Emily Blunt debuts in the first spot with $24.5 million, while Nate Parker's movie opens soft in the sixth place with $7 million.

Emily Blunt's psychological thriller "The Girl on the Train (2016)" debuts in the first place at the North American box office with $24.5 million. The film adaptation of Paula Hawkins' best-selling novel collects $16.5 million overseas for its total cume of $41 million globally so far.
"This is a big moment for Emily Blunt, who absolutely carries this movie," says Universal domestic distribution chief Nick Carpou. Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst of comScore, adds, "It's just another example of her incredible acting abilities and career, which is on a major trajectory."
Meanwhile, Nate Parker's "The Birth of a Nation" opens soft in the sixth place in its debut weekend. Though it notches the highest audience grade of the week's new releases on CinemaScore by earning a rare A, the R-rated biopic can only bag $7 million from 2,105 theaters.
"Historically, controversies surrounding filmmakers don't really have an effect," says Dergarabedian. "Considering what's going on in the marketplace, it did just fine," he explains, adding that "it's not a huge number, but people are talking about it, and that's not always a bad thing" at the box office.
Last week's champion, "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" drops one slot to the runner-up spot in its second week, falling 47.6|percent| to $15.1 million. So far, the Tim Burton-directed fantasy flick starring Eva Green and Asa Butterfield collects a domestic total of $51.2 million from 3.705 theaters.
Rounding out the top five are "Deepwater Horizon", "The Magnificent Seven" and "Storks". The oil-rig thriller starring Mark Wahlberg earns an additional $11.5 million in its second week. Meanwhile, the Antoine Fuqua-directed movie and Warner Bros.' animation collect $9 million and $8.3 million respectively in their third weeks.
