'Criminal Minds' Finds Thomas Gibson's Replacement, John Legend Lands 'Underground' Role

Damon Gupton joins the cast of 'Criminal Minds' as a new series regular following Gibson's departure, while Legend will guest star as the iconic abolitionist Frederick Douglass on WGN America's drama.

AceShowbiz - It doesn't take a long time for "Criminal Minds" to find a replacement for %cThomas Gibson% following the actor's abrupt departure. The show has cast %cDamon Gupton% in a series regular role of Special Agent Stephen Walker from the Behavioral Analysis Program, which is the counterintelligence division of the FBI.

He's a seasoned profiler who will bring his spy-hunting skill set to the BAU. Gupton's character will be introduced in the eighth episode of the current 12th season, though he will not be a direct replacement for Hotch, who led the BAU. The new head of the unit is expected to come within.

"Our BAU family is growing," says executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer. "We're excited to have Damon join the show and work alongside our amazing cast and crew."

Gibson will make his last appearance in the upcoming second episode of the season, which will air Wednesday, October 5 at 9 P.M. ET on CBS.

In other casting news, singer %cJohn Legend% is set to guest star on WGN America's "Underground", which he executive produces. The "All of Me" hitmaker will portray the iconic abolitionist Frederick Douglass in an episode of season 2.

Born into slavery, Douglass refused to let his circumstance determine his future. After he daringly escaped bondage in Maryland, he went on to become one of the most revolutionary leaders of the 19th century. A prominent writer, celebrated speaker and progressive political reformist, Douglass was a beacon of hope for many and a symbol of remarkable resilience.

"Underground" season 2 will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to premiere in early 2017.
