Alexis Arquette Died of Complications Related to AIDS, Sources Confirm

Multiple sources, including Alexis' former boyfriend, say that the transgender actress and activist passed away after a long battle with AIDS-related illness.

AceShowbiz - When announcing Alexis Arquette's passing on Sunday, September 11, her family didn't say anything about what caused her death. Now, some sources can confirm that the transgender actress and activist died of complications related to AIDS.

One of the sources told PEOPLE that prior to her death, Alexis "had been suffering for a long time." The source continued, "She was sick for years. At one point, she wasn't able to leave the house; she was in bad shape."

The source also revealed that Alexis' famous family "rallied around her" in her final hours and "in the end they were always there to support her. Everyone knew [her death] was imminent. It was a matter of time." The family is now "doing as well as can be expected. They all love Alexis very much."

Another souce was Alexis' ex-boyfriend Robert Dupont who told Radar Online that the actress also lived with several other ailments. "Alexis was living with AIDS and he had an inoperable tumor and he had developed an infection. I was told that went to his liver and throughout his body," he said, adding that Alexis was put in an "induced coma" before her death.

Alexis died at the age of 47 surrounded by her loved ones who were singing her David Bowie's "Starman". "We held her and sang her David Bowie's 'Starman' as she punched through the veil to the other side. We washed her body in rose petals and surrounded her with flowers," her family said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Her siblings David Arquette and Patricia Arquette, as well as friends including Candis Cayne and David's ex-wife Courteney Cox later took to social media to pay tribute to Alexis.
