Marvel Studios is currently looking for directors to helm "Captain Marvel". According to The Hollywood Reporter, three female filmmakers have been courted to help bring the Carol Danvers story to the big screen for another Phase Three project in the MCU.

Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria are reportedly the top contenders to direct Marvel's first female-centric superhero movie. Caro scripted and directed 2002's critically praised "Whale Rider". Meanwhile, Glatter directed the hit spy thriller "Homeland". As for Scafaria, "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist" was her first writing credit and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" was her feature directorial debut.

Sources say that Marvel will give a treatment and documents to the contenders to prepare a detailed presentation. The three contenders were reportedly shortlisted for the helming duties from strong contenders, including Jennifer Kent who helmed the indie horror hit "The Babadook" and Jennifer Yuh who directed "Kung Fu Panda 2". The studio hasn't given any comment, but sources caution that there may be names yet to surface.

"Captain Marvel" is scheduled to make its way out in U.S. theaters on March 8, 2019. Oscar winner Brie Larson is tapped to portray Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot who gains powers after her DNA becomes fused with an alien after an accident. The script is provided by "Guardians of the Galaxy" co-scribe Nicole Perlman and "Inside Out (2015)" co-writer Meg LeFauve. Kevin Feige is serving as producer.
