'Splash' Remake in the Works With Channing Tatum Starring as the Mermaid

Jillian Bell, who worked together with Tatum in '22 Jump Street', is also set to star in the film, which is based on 1984's romantic comedy film of the same name, as the mermaid's love interest.

AceShowbiz - Disney and Imagine Entertainment are in early stage of rebooting "Splash", one of the production banner's classics starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in lead roles. According to Deadline, Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell are set to play the lead characters in the remake.

In the new version of the film, Tatum takes the role of the mermaid character played by Hannah in the original and Bell is cast in the role played by Hanks. Marja-Lewis Ryan is set to pen the script. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment will produce the film along with Free Association's Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kieran. Anna Culp of Imagine will executive produce.

The 1984 romantic comedy film "Splash" focuses on a young boy who was saved from drowning by a mermaid. The mermaid returns 20 years later and finds the boy she once saved. She gives him the option between his life on land or a life under the sea with her. In the reboot film, Tatum portrays the mermaid who saves Bell as a girl only to reunite with her years later.

Tatum and Bell previously worked together in 2014's "22 Jump Street". The 36-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Jenko in the upcoming film "MIB 23" alongside Jonah Hill who will reprise his role as Schmidt. As for the "Goosebumps" actress, she can next be seen along with Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman and T.J. Miller in "Office Christmas Party" which hits U.S. theaters on December 9.
