The collaborative project from Sony could be directed by James Bobin and begin production this summer.

James Bobin is poised to helm the "23 Jump Street" and "Men in Black" crossover, which was first announced in December 2014. Per Variety, "The Muppets" director is in early talks and a deal is expected to be completed soon because filming is scheduled to begin in June.

Sony's Columbia Pictures, which owns the rights to "MIB", greenlit the project "off the concept and the talent involved." Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are reprising their "Jump Street" characters in addition to producing. However, "MIB" stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not return as the agents because they want younger and fresher faces. It is yet clear who will take over the roles.

Meanwhile, "Jump Street" directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are taking the seats as producers with Neal Moritz. "22 Jump Street" scribe Rodney Rothman is penning the script which plot is yet revealed.

But Lord had an idea. Hinting that Tatum's Jenko and Hill's Schmidt could be seen battling aliens, Lord told MTV News last year, "We're really focusing on what's a great story for Schmidt and Jenko and how to tell the next chapter in their lives. And perhaps use creatures from another world at the same time."
