According to his publicist, Merle is in a California hospital for treatment of a recurring bout of double pneumonia. Doctors of the 78-year-old singer wanted him to rest and recover for at least one more month before performing.

Merle also cancelled some dates in February because he was still feeling weak from a previous case of pneumonia in both lungs, but then returned to the stage last month.

Back in 2009, Merle told PEOPLE how he was doing "better every day" after undergoing lung cancer surgery. He was diagnosed with with non-small-cell lung cancer in 2008. The "Today I Started Loving You Again" singer was a heavy cigarette smoker until he gave up his Camels in 1992, but he insisted his cancer wasn't caused by smoking.
