The actor was previously attached to star in the movie version of the noir comic book series by B. Clay Moore and Steven Griffin.

AceShowbiz - Johnny Knoxville has "Hawaiian Dick" in mind. Together with NBC, the former "Jackass" star is developing a one-hour comedic action series based on graphic novel series from writer B. Clay Moore and graphic artist Steven Griffin.

The series centers on a stateside cop named Byrd, who is exiled to Hawaii and becomes immersed in a dark and dangerous paradise. The comic is a mix of procedural, supernatural and humor. Three installments have been released so far with the fourth scheduled to hit the shelves in early 2016.

Knoxville will take the role of executive producer along with Michael Rotenberg and David Janollari of 3 Arts Entertainment as well as Chickie the Cop Entertainments' Eric Gitter. In charge of writing the project are "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" and "Four Brothers" scribes Paul Lovett and David Elliot.

Knoxville had actually attempted to bring the comic book to life in a movie. Back in 2004, the actor was attached to star in the movie adaptation by New Line. Writers were hired in 2006 but a movie never came to fruition. There is yet indication whether Knoxville will be involved in front of the camera for the NBC series.

The Peacock has also optioned to adapt another comic book to series. In August, the network ordered a pilot of DC Comics' "Powerless" from "A to Z" creator Ben Queen.
