Alicia Vikander is set to replace Rooney Mara in "The Girl in the Spider's Web", an adaptation of Stieg Larsson's book of the same name. According to TheWrap, Vikander is in negotiations to play Lisbeth Salander, a role previously played by Mara in previous film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)".

"Spider's Web" is the fourth book in Larsson's "Millenium" series, but it was written by David Lagercrantz after the former died in 2004. Sony opted to bring "Spider's Web" to the big screen instead of the second book "The Girl Who Played with Fire". And "Fire" is now expected to follow "Spider's Web".

The fourth book centers on Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist working together again to uncover secrets surrounding cybercriminals and spies. Scott Rudin and former Sony chief Amy Pascal will produce "Spider's Web" along with Elizabeth Cantillon and Swedish production company Yellow Bird.

The first book in the series, "Dragon Tattoo" was adapted by David Fincher in 2011. The movie also starred Daniel Craig and won an Oscar for The Best Film Editing. However, Fincher, Craig and Mara are not likely to return.

Vikander has become a high-in-demand actress after her performance as Ava in "Ex Machina". She recently starred in "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and will next be seen in "The Danish Girl".
