The 'Martian' actor says his best friend was 'misunderstood' during his relationship with Jennifer Lopez years ago.

AceShowbiz - Matt Damon defends Ben Affleck during the "Gone Girl" actor's very-public relationship with Jennifer Lopez years ago. "There's nobody who's more misunderstood," Damon says of his best friend in an interview to promote his new movie "The Martian".

"Ten years ago, the public image of him could not have been farther apart from who he actually is. It was like he was being cast in a role, that he was a talentless kind of meathead, with his whole relationship with Jennifer Lopez," Damon explains to The Hollywood Reporter.

"He just got cast as this person that he wasn't. It was just really painful. It was painful to be his friend, because it wasn't fair, you know? To my mind, nobody really got him at all. And through his work, he climbed from the bottom of the mountain all the way back up to the top and past where either of us had ever been," he continues.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were famously known as Bennifer during their relationship. They started dating after meeting on the set of "Gigli" but broke up following the release of the romcom which bombed at the box office and was panned by critics.
