Astronauts aboard the International Space Station were treated to a special screening of the Matt Damon starrer over the weekend.

AceShowbiz - Matt Damon's outer space movie "The Martian" may not hit theaters until October 2, but the movie has been shown in some locations after all. The latest special screening was extraordinary as it was held for astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

They watched the film on their new HD projector. "#Movie night in micro #Gravity aboard #ISS on our new HD projector which we use for conferences, tech software, etc..," astronaut Scott Kelly tweeted.

Kelly also posted a photo which features himself along with three friends watching the movie inside the space station. "Watched @MartianMovie on @Space_Station last night! Today working towards our #JourneyToMars during my #YearInSpace!" Kelly caption the photo.

It seems like the astronauts have a habit of watching space disaster flicks. One of the astronauts noted that they watched "Gravity", Sandra Bullock's movie about explorers who are trapped in space, back in April.

"The Martian" is based on a best-selling novel by Andy Weir which follows a lone man who must figure out how to survive long enough on Mars to return to Earth. The movie also stars Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kristen Wiig. It is directed by Ridley Scott with a script written by Drew Goddard.
