Legendary Pictures is putting "Pacific Rim 2" on an indefinitely hold. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that while Legendary liked that the original "Pacific Rim" performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, the sequel will be pushed back or canceled altogether.

Guillermo del Toro committed in June 2014 to making the sequel with Universal scheduling the release for April 7, 2017. The studio later decided to move the release date back to August 4, 2017. Guillermo had said the production would begin in November, but just last week a report said the production wouldn't start until next year.

Neither Legendary nor Universal has commented on the report yet.

"Pacific Rim 2" is considerably a long-gestating project. Guillermo was already talking about the sequel before the first movie arrived in theaters. The director said of the progress back in July, "We are deep into designing the robots, the Kaijus...having fun planning the battles. We have an epic battle at the end of this that we started to design a couple of weeks ago. We've been up for about three or four months designing, and we start shooting in November."
