Edward Zwick in Talks to Direct Tom Cruise's 'Jack Reacher' Sequel

The 'Last Samurai' director is currently in negotiations to direct 'Jack Reacher 2' and rewrite Richard Wenk's script along with Marshall Herkovitz.

AceShowbiz - Paramount and Skydance are currently in negotiations with Edward Zwick to direct Tom Cruise's "Jack Reacher 2", according to Deadline. Ed is also in talks to rewrite Richard Wenk's script along with Marshall Herkovitz.

Richard wrote the draft of the script based on Lee Child's 2013 book "Never Go Back", the eighteenth book in Jack Reacher series. Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote and directed the first film "Jack Reacher", will executive produce the sequel along with Tom and Don Granger.

"Jack Reacher 2" follows the former military member returning to the headquarters of his old unit in Virginia and facing complications including a serious criminal offense. It is set for a 2016 release.

The first "Jack Reacher" grossed $80 million domestically and $218 million worldwide on a reported budget of $60 million.

Ed and Marshall previously worked together with Tom in 2003's "The Last Samurai". The pair also wrote the script for Jake Gyllenhaal - Anne Hathaway's 2010 romantic drama "Love and Other Drugs". Ed is the director of upcoming movie "Pawn Sacrifice" starring Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber which is set to hit U.S. theaters on September 18.
