The son of Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan gets a jail time due to an accident that left one person dead and several others injured.

AceShowbiz - Bollywood star Salman Khan was found guilty of culpable homicide, a charge stemming from a 2002 fatal accident in the Bandra area of Mumbai. During a court hearing on Wednesday morning, May 6, the 49-year-old actor was sentenced to five years in prison.

Thirteen years ago on the night of September 28, Khan's Toyota Land Cruiser crashed into American Express bakery and ran over five people sleeping on the street. One person was killed, three others were seriously injured, and a fifth victim suffered minor injuries.

Judge D.W. Deshpande told Khan as the court proceedings began, "You were driving the car; you were under the influence of alcohol." However, the actor denied he was drunk and claimed it was his driver who was behind the wheel when the crash happened.

A police officer who was part of Khan's security detail once told police that the actor was intoxicated and he lost control of the car. The officer who became a prime witness in the case unfortunately died in 2007 of tuberculosis. Khan's driver told the court last month that he was the one who crashed the car due to a burst tire, but the judge didn't buy the story.

Salman Khan got emotional after the sentencing and immediately appealed the verdict. He was released from custody pending a decision on his bail request, which is due Friday.
