A few weeks after the release date for "Rings" was announced, new reports emerge suggesting that the upcoming horror film will be a prequel to the previous film "The Ring", which was released back in 2002. Bloody Disgusting cites sources as claiming the film's plot will be set "years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara's reign of terror" to undercover "as to why Samara is evil to begin with."
F. Javier Gutierrez is directing the new film, with Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka, and Jacon Aaron Estes all lending their hands in writing the script. Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz has been confirmed to star in "Rings", but her character has not yet been disclosed. Casting is still underway while the feature has been set to hit the theaters on November 13 later this year.
"The Ring", starring Naomi Watts, was a remake of "Ringu", a 1998 Japanese horror film directed by Hideo Nakata. Following its commercial success, a sequel was then released in 2005 titled "The Ring 2". Both films told much of Samara's twisted backstory.
