Joel Kinnaman Rumored to Be Frontrunner for Rick Flag in 'Suicide Squad'

According to multiple sources, the 'Robocop' star is up to replace Tom Hardy in the DC supervillain movie which is set to start production in April.

AceShowbiz - "Suicide Squad" may have found its Rick Flag in Joel Kinnaman. According to THR, the "Robocop" actor is in early talks to play the character. If the deal is sealed, Kinnaman will replace Tom Hardy who bowed out of the project. Jake Gyllenhaal was previously linked to the role, but it eventually didn't work out.

"Suicide Squad" tells the story of a group of DC comics villains who are sent by the government to dangerous mission to redeem their past. In addition to the leader Rick Flag, the group consists of The Joker, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Boomerang and Enchantress who will be portrayed by Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne respectively. Viola Davis' Amanda Waller will oversee the team.

Smith and Robbie, who are gearing up for their new movie "Focus", said in a new interview that they were not worried about Rick Flag vacancy. "This happens all the time. People act like, 'Oh my god, the movie must be ending!' It's just the deal with movies," Robbie said in a recent interview with USA Today.

She also said that "a lot of the characters haven't been portrayed before so it's a pretty big undertaking." She added, "And it's a big undertaking for the people who are going to play the characters who have been played, like the Joker. It's big shoes to fill." Both actors also explained that it was hard to manage with everyone's schedule.

"Suicide Squad", directed by David Ayer, is set to start production in April. The movie targets August 5, 2016 release.
