All contenders for the 24 categories at the Academy Awards will be revealed on January 15 at a special two-part live news conference.

AceShowbiz - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is doing the Oscar nomination announcement a bit differently this year. Instead of revealing contenders in 12 categories only like they did in the past, the Academy decides to unearth all nominees in the 24 categories at a special two-part live news conference.

"Star Trek" actor Chris Pine, his "Star Trek" helmer J.J. Abrams, and "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuaron are tapped to join Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs for the January 15 announcement. Usually, only one actor was enlisted to help the Academy chief with the event.

"Each of the three years we've produced the show, we have attempted to refresh elements of the process and the telecast," said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. "This year, we're honored to start a new tradition that celebrates the contributions of all the nominees by announcing all 24 categories. We're thrilled that a distinguished actor and two world-class film directors are part of the initial launch."

Meron added to EW, "It was about expanding that spotlight and creating interest in the categories that people might not think are as important as the others." Isaacs chimed in, "The Academy is all about celebrating filmmaking. That includes all aspects and areas and departments, and all the talented people it takes to make a motion picture."

Abrams and Cuaron will kick it off at 5:30 A.M. PT to announce nominees for Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Film Editing, Original Song, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.

Then, Pine and Isaacs will take it over at 5:38 A.M. PT to reveal contenders for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.

The winners will be feted at the 87th Academy Awards scheduled for February 22. Neil Patrick Harris serves as a host.
