Jason White, the lead guitarist of Green Day, was diagnosed with tonsil cancer, the band announced the news on its official website on Friday, December 5. According to the band, doctors concluded that the form of the cancer was "treatable."

"We have some news to report regarding our brother Jason White, and wanted you to hear it from us before word spread," the band said in a statement, "Jason recently underwent a routine tonsillectomy, and his doctors discovered a treatable form of tonsil cancer. Thankfully they caught it early and he should make a full and speedy recovery. Please join us in sending him love and positive healing vibes during this time. "

Jason has been a part of Green Day since he joined Billie Joe Armstrong's side project Pinhead Gunpowder in the early 1990s. He first joined the band onstage as the second guitarist during their "Warning" tour in 1999. He eventually became the lead guitarist of the band and was named the official member of the group in late 2012.

Green Day is among the nominees who are set to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2015.
