David Fincher Says He Turned Down 'Star Wars Episode VII' and Explains Why
Movie

The 'Gone Girl' helmer chose not to direct the seventh installment of 'Star Wars' movie because he felt he would not get the opportunity to make the movie like he wanted.

In a new interview, David Fincher reveals he once talked to producer Kathleen Kennedy about "Star Wars Episode VII" before J.J. Abrams was signed on. He says he wanted to make a dark movie like "Empire Strikes Back", but he felt the studio's top heads would not allow him. He eventually withdrew himself from the contention to helm the pic.

"I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it's a different thing from... I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like," he told Total Film. "It's tricky... My favorite is 'The Empire Strikes Back'. If I said, 'I want to do something more like that,' then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!' "

The "Gone Girl" director went on to share his thoughts on how he saw the franchise. "I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man...," he explained. "I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by 'Return of the Jedi'."
