Sony Develops Edward Snowden Movie With James Bond Producers

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will serve as producers for the movie about NSA whistleblower who now becomes a fugitive.

A movie about controversial NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is officially in the works. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who are known for producing James Bond films like "Skyfall" and "Quantum of Solace", are on board to produce the true-story film for Sony.

The movie will be based on Glenn Greenwald's book "No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U. S. Surveillance State". Sony announces purchase of movie rights to the book shortly after it hit the shelves, but the property has been a hot commodity since last fall.

"No Place to Hide" chronicles Greenwald's contact with Snowden, an ex-National Security Agency contractor, who claimed to have astonishing evidence of pervasive government spying. The book tells the consequences of Snowden's actions and the controversies that follow.

Greenwald earned a Pulitzer Prize earlier this year for his efforts with Snowden to expose NSA. He said of the movie deal, "Growing up, I was heavily influenced by political films, and am excited about the opportunity to be part of a political film that will resonate with today's moviegoers."

The journalist also praised Sony, a home for critically-acclaimed true-story movies like "Captain Phillips", "Zero Dark Thirty (2012)", "Moneyball", and "The Social Network", for their "successful track record of making thoughtful and nuanced true-life stories that audiences want to see."

Doug Belgrad, head of Sony division Columbia Pictures, said that Snowden's "explosive revelations have raised important questions about the role of government in protecting its citizens and the balance between national security and personal freedom."

"We are extremely proud that Michael, Barbara and Glenn chose Sony to bring this riveting story to the big screen, and believe that Glenn's account of this incredible international event will make for a gripping and unforgettable film."
