Peter Jackson seemingly takes his plan to make a third "The Hobbit" film seriously. After teasing the possibility of the third film during this year's San Diego Comic-Con, the Oscar winner is now said to be "in deep talks" with Warner Bros. Pictures to develop the threequel.
The Hollywood Reporters has the words that the New Zealand-born filmmaker wants to adapt the Hobbit tale into a trilogy. Should his plan get the approval, an additional shooting for the novel-adapted movie series will take place next summer for around two months in the director's homeland.
"If we're going to do it, we have to make a decision soon. It's strongly driven by the filmmakers' desire to tell more of the story," an insider reveals. "It's about taking the chance to tell more of the incredible tale with the cast we have assembled."
It is reported that Warners, producer Fran Walsh and writer Philippa Boyens are accelerating their negotiations in recent days. Words are, the studio is willing to give a greenlight if the financial arrangement can be fixed, including securing the deal for new actors.
Jackson has previously hinted at the possible third chapter of "The Hobbit", but noting that the plan was still premature. The "Lord of the Rings" helmer revealed that there were some parts in the "Hobbit" tale that he hasn't explored in the two upcoming movies.
"What form that would actually end up taking, well the discussion are pretty early," he stated, before adding, "So there isn't really anything to report but there's other parts of the story that we'd like to tell that we haven't been able to tell yet."
Jackosn's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" will make its way out onto the U.S. theaters on December 14, while its follow up, "The Hobbit: There and Back Again", will be dropped nationwide a year later on December 13.
