"The Amazing Spider-Man" has yet to open in the U.S. theaters, but already Sony Pictures has tapped screenwriters for its sequel. On Tuesday, April 24, the studio announced that it has picked "Star Trek" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to pen the script for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2".

On tapping the scribe duo for the next Spidey film, producer Matt Tolmach said, "Alex and Bob have a unique ability to writer great character and spectacular action that makes them pitch perfect for Spider-Man." He added, "They've been friends of ours for a long time and they have an exciting take on the franchise - we're thrilled to have them join the Spider-Man family."

Procuder Avi Arad quipped, "It's a thrill to have Alex and Bob put their stamp in this franchise that we all love so well. They have an innate understanding of what makes Peter Parker not just a superhero, but a hero for all of us."

Sharing their excitement for being attached to "Amazing Spider-Man 2", Kurtzman and Orci said in a joint statement, "We grew up as huge Spider-Man fans so, to us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail."

The duo, who also penned the script for Michael Bay's "Transformers", went on gushing, "We love the direction Sony and the filmmakers are taking the Peter Parker/Spider-Man mythology and we couldn't be more excited to be a part of this legendary franchise."

The first draft for "Amazing Spider-Man 2" was written by James Vanderbilt. The production is tentatively scheduled to kick off in the first quarter of 2013, while the film itself is set to arrive in cinemas nationwide on May 2, 2014. As for the first movie, which sees Andrew Garfield as the titular superhero, it will open this summer on July 3.

Aside from the "Spider-Man" sequel, Orci and Kurtzman have been tapped in several upcoming high-end movies, including "People Like Us", "Ender's Game", "Now You See Me" and the untitled Star Trek sequel.
