Super Bowl XLVI has broken the game's own record as the most watched U.S. TV program in history. The Sunday, February 5 match between New York Giants and New England Patriots was tuned in by an average of 111.3 million viewers, up from the averaged 111 million audience last year.
The game, which was won by the Giants, posted the highest rating in 16 years with an average of 40.5 rating in adults 18-49 demo. Moreover, the halftime show which featured Madonna as one of the musical performers posted a record for the most watched Super Bowl halftime show with 114 million viewers, up 3|percent| from last year's show headlined by Black Eyed Peas.
Benefiting from the Super Bowl lead-in was "The Voice" season 2 premiere. Getting the coveted spot after the football match, the singing competition drew 37.6 million audience and a 16.3 rating in the 18-49 demo, up 40|percent| in total viewers and 47|percent| in the demo from last year's post-Super Bowl telecast of "Glee" on FOX.
Though it could not beat the number of viewers (38.7 million) tuning in CBS' "Undercover Boss" debut which aired after the 2010 Super Bowl, it managed to gain the best rating for post-Super Bowl program in 18-49 demo since 2006, when ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" raked in a 16.5 rating.
