Replacing Kenneth Branagh who exited the sequel project last June, the 'Monsters' helmer will be the first female director to work for Marvel Studios.

AceShowbiz - "Thor 2" has finally found its new director. On Thursday, October 13, Marvel Studios officially confirmed that Patty Jenkins has been tapped to helm the sequel of "Thor". Jenkins, who directed 2003's "Monster" that helped Charlize Theron win an Oscar, will be the first female director to work for Marvel.

Last September, it has been reported that Jenkins was in early talks to replace Kenneth Branagh, who bowed out the project last June. She edged out other filmmakers who were also considered for the project, including Brian Kirk, who directed some episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones".

While Marvel confirmed the new director for "Thor 2", Walt Disney Pictures announced the new release date for the superhero film. After being planned to open in U.S. theaters on July 26, 2013, the forthcoming superhero movie is re-scheduled to arrive on November 15 the same year, just in time of the Thanksgiving week.

"Thor 2" will bring back Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins to reprise their roles as Thor, Foster and Odin respectively. Screenwriter Don Payne will come back to provide the screenplay.

The plot of "Thor 2" is still kept under wraps. However, Marvel President Kevin Feige teased that the sequel would "take Thor literally to other world." He told Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming movie will "primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin) is working out as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds."
