TV

The film called 'Behind the Candelabra' will start shooting for the cable channel next summer under the direction of Steven Soderbergh.

AceShowbiz - HBO has snagged a Liberace biopic which has Hollywood's A-listers attached to it. The film entitled "Behind the Candelabra" has long tapped Michael Douglas to star as the flamboyant pianist, and Matt Damon as his live-in lover Scott Thorson, with Steven Soderbergh on board to direct.

The cable channel does not immediately release the premiere date, but announces that principal photography will be kicked off next summer. Produced by Gregory Jacobs, the movie will depict the relationship between Liberace and Thorson, who later filed a palimony suit against him.

Jerry Weintraub, who serves as executive producer, teases that the movie will explore Liberace's "dark side and his light side," calling the pianist "Elton John and Lady GaGa before they even dreamed of it." He says the performer's sexuality "is not a delicate subject, but it was a taboo subject when he was a young man, not like today," before adding, "In those days, if you came out of the closet you had no career, and so he didn't do that."
