Grossing $22.4 million, the Steven Soderbergh-directed movie knocks down last week's chart-topper 'The Help' and another newcomer 'Warrior'.

Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" successfully locked the number one spot on North American box office. Earning $22.4 million, the movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Matt Damon ruled the chart in its debut week.
Warner Bros. Pictures executive vp domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein gushed, "A wonderful director, a compelling storyline and a great marketing campaign and release date delivered a terrific result." The pandemic thriller received a B- CinemaScore, and appealed to around 80|percent| of viewers over the age of 25.
On the second place, there was Tate Taylor-directed film "The Help". After dominating the chart for three weeks in a row, the Emma Stone-starring drama dropped one position with additional $8.9 million for a total of $137.1 million for its domestic cume.
Another new release this week, "Warrior", landed on the third place. The mix martial arts drama grossed $5.2 million. The result is lower than the expectation since the film was a favorite of critics and received an A CinemaScore from moviegoers.
On number four and five, there were "The Debt" and "Colombiana" respectively. The Sam Worthington-starring thriller raked in $4.7 million for a total cume of $22 million. Meanwhile, the female action starring Zoe Saldana grossed $3.9 million this week.
