The album may snatch the title as the best-selling album this year, but it's also the worst in more than a decade.

With its big jump from #14 to #6 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart this week, High School Musical 2 soundtrack was named the highest-selling album in 2007. The compilation, that includes performances by the TV series' stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, accumulated 2.3 million sold copies since the release on August 14.
The title was initially reigned by DAUGHTRY's self-titled album but since the musical's soundtrack had a 130 per cent increase in its 15th week, it was immediately replaced. The twist is, the soundtrack is also named the worst selling album in one year since SoundScan's count in 1991.
2.3 million is by far the lowest number in 16 years, with the previous least sale is High School Music first soundtrack numbering at 3.7 million copies. The big record is held by Shania Twain's 1997 album 'Come on Over' that sold 15.4 million copies in a year, marking it the biggest-selling album of all time by a female musician.
This case is seen as the benefit of releasing the album earlier in the year. Albums that have sold pretty high in the first week such as Alicia Keys' 'As I Am', Kanye West's 'Graduation' and Eagles' 'Long Road Out of Eden' would have taken the title as Number One had they been released earlier.
