women never have a great time in Westerns, but Brimstone takes it to extremes; inflicting endless humiliation, misery and trauma upon its female characters
given its bloodlust, "Brimstone" might have been better if Mr. Koolhoven had roughed up the story more (and not only his heroine) and gone for full-on exploitation
"Brimstone" has a hard time sewing its feminist fervor into anything more than a thin shawl over its bleak spectacle, this disturbingly watchable religious Western makes a solid case that hell is a place on Earth
