the push and pull between what we expect to hear or see, and what comes instead is one of the great and consistent punchline joys of this silent film about silent films
the image is too pristine (the movie was originally shot in color, because of the scarcity of black-and-white film stock), the editing rhythms and camera angles noticeably modern
it conveys emotions, thoughts and feelings through clever visual means, making intertitled-dialogue scarce at best, and allowing the viewer to extrapolate their own interpretation from several scenes
