On the heels of the Cold War and subsequent political shake ups, the world was on edge. The threat of a nuclear attack loomed and it seemed as if there was nothing that could be done to stop it. But one man, Stanislav Petrov, had a plan. Petrov was a high-ranking officer in the Soviet air defense system, and it was his job to detect and respond to incoming nuclear missiles. In 1983, the Soviet Union's early-warning system detected what appeared to be five incoming nuclear missiles from the United States. Petrov had just minutes to decide whether or not the missiles were real, and if they were, whether or not to launch a retaliatory strike.
