Alex has been asked to give a presentation at his alma mater, and Whitney couldn't be more proud. While Alex is getting ready, Whitney tries to calm his nerves by jokingly convincing him to try one of his funny accents during his speech. They decide to stop by the bar on the way to the presentation.

At the bar, Whitney and Alex run into Mark, RJ and Lily. RJ demonstrates chivalry to Mark by freeing up a chair for Lily and helping her take her coat off. Lily appreciates the gestures, and Mark begins to think that maybe practicing some chivalry could help him with Roxanne. Whitney and Alex head out to the college for Alex's big night.

At the college, Alex takes the stage to present his speech while Whitney hushes annoying students on their cell phones. Alex's speech is going well. The audience loves his humor and candor. Then, disaster strikes. Alex misjudges the size of the stage and falls off of it, toppling into the crowd below. Whitney laughs louder and harder than anyone else, which infuriates Alex.

Back at their apartment, Whitney apologizes for laughing at Alex, but she still can't control her amusement. Meanwhile, Alex is devastated and humiliated and Whitney laughing at him isn't helping matters. Alex also discovers that Whitney posted the video of him falling off the stage online, and Whitney's mom reposted it before she could take it down. Fed up with life, Alex decides to go to bed.

Roxanne shows up to the bar, and Mark decides to test out some of RJ's chivalrous moves. Predictably, they don't work. Mark's attempt to help Roxanne with a chair turns into an all-out furniture fight. Mark tells Roxanne that he was trying to be chivalrous, but since it's not working he's not going to do anything for her from now on.

The next day, Alex receives an email from another professor inviting him to give a guest lecture. After last night's embarrassment, Alex doesn't want to do it. Whitney says it would be great for him. When Alex walks away from his computer, she responds to the invitation, saying Alex will do it. Alex gets upset and accuses Whitney of being selfish, telling her she's "just like her mother." This cuts deep with Whitney.

At the bar, Whitney tells Roxanne and Lily about what Alex said. The three of them begin comparing themselves to their mothers and realize that Alex was right: they've all turned into their mothers. Whitney decides to end her "motherly" behavior right away. She heads back home to smooth things over with Alex.

At home, Whitney apologizes to Alex. She tells him that he was right about her acting like her mother, and that she's going to try not to do that in the future. She also explains that she's incredibly proud of Alex. The apology works and Alex totally forgives her, saying that he's actually excited about the second guest lecture.

Back at the bar, Roxanne is ready to head home. Mark is still giving her the cold shoulder, but she decides to give his chivalry idea a chance by asking Mark to help her with her coat. Mark tries to help Roxanne put her coat on. It's awkward and weird, but they share a moment at the end, right before Roxanne leaves.

Whitney shows Alex a YouTube video mash-up that a student made following Alex's presentation. It's ridiculous and embarrassing, and Alex gets upset. Whitney apologizes for showing him the video, but he says he's not upset because of the video. He's upset because it only has eight views.
