Jim and Melinda attend the festivities surrounding the second marriage of Jim's good friend Tricia, a young widow with a daughter, Natalie. The location for the wedding is Tricia's family's lake house, where she had spent her summers growing up. Once there, Natalie, who is still young enough to see ghosts, starts playing games with a young spirit who leads her to clues meant for Tricia.

However, these clues are unpleasant things that either scare or hurt Tricia, once Natalie hands them over to her. Thinking that Natalie is just acting out, Tricia scolds her for trying to stress her out around her wedding, but Melinda knows that Natalie is in contact with a spirit who is trying to get a message to Tricia. Melinda discovers the spirit is a little crippled boy who Tricia had played with down by the river when she was very young. When she didn't show up one day, he tried to go and find her by crossing the river.

Without Tricia's help, he slipped, fell in to the river and drowned. However, Tricia was still young enough to see ghosts at that point, and they were able to spend all summer playing the game that the ghost is playing with Natalie now. After Melinda helps Tricia remember all this, she puts the clues together and discovers that the ghost had discovered that Hunter, her fiance, was a fraud. Tricia breaks off the engagement, leaving Hunter devastated. Later, the ghost appears to Melinda at her shop and tells her Hunter is still at the lake house. Melinda tries to warn Jim, who is on his way there to pick up some things, but can't get him on his cell. Once at the lake house, Jim encounters Hunter, who is drunk with a gun, and when Jim tries to wrestle the gun away from Hunter the scuffle leads to Jim getting shot.
