Henry has been away from work for weeks after having killed a man in self-defense. Jo and Lucas miss his "joie de death." The no-nonsense substitute M.E., Dr. Washington, is adverse to outlandish theories and jokes. When young Wall Street hot shot Jason Fox is found dead by the East River, Washington rules it an accidental drowning. Henry is motivated to dive back in after Abe informs him that Jason was the son of his old army buddy. He finds more than enough evidence of foul play to rule it a homicide.

Abe's old pal, Marco, regrets that he couldn't keep his son safe. Henry recalls the time he didn't want Abe to go to Vietnam, but his son considered it his duty. As for the case, Henry discovers the floors of Jason's apartment are made of white pine, which is what he found under Jason's fingernails. He removes a floorboard and discovers $100,000 in cash. Jason's girlfriend claims to know nothing about the money.

Val, a stock broker in Jason's office, mistakes Henry and Jo for the designers who are going to redo things to his taste. The guy isn't a fan of Jason's lower-class "Deep Brooklyn" background. Jason's boss, Oliver (guest star Billy Baldwin), gives a jarring memorial speech. The employees chant the company's cutthroat motto: "Kill or be killed." Henry and Jo leave with the impression that any of Jason's coworkers could be a suspect. Or the suspect could be closer to home.

Jason had a fight with Kevin, a buddy from the old neighborhood. The guy admits Jason invested $100,000 for him that he never returned it. Henry and Jo find parts of Jason's brand new Aston Martin, including the engine inside the Impala that Kevin drives. Henry faces down the car, until Jo tackles him to save his life.

When Kevin is caught, he says he took the car as repayment for the money Jason owed him, but someone else drove it back to Jason's place at 4 a.m. He identifies the mystery driver as Val, the guy eager to take over Jason's office. Jo arrests Val, who swears that he simply moved the body at Oliver's request.

Abe is desperate to help in the case. Henry lends him a piece of evidence-an unusual key found in Jason's office. Abe takes it to Jerry, another old Army buddy, who happens to be a locksmith. The key is traced to Oliver's yacht where Henry and Jo retrieve some hidden financial papers.

Henry and Jo serve a search warrant on Oliver. His salt-water swimming pool likely has the same salinity as what was in Jason's lungs and the same broken glass as at the crime scene. Henry surmises that Jason was hit with a bottle of wine, fell into the pool and drowned. Oliver is about to be arrested when Melanie, Oliver's assistant, confesses to Lieutenant Reece. Melanie claims she killed Jason after he hit on her and implied she was sleeping with Oliver. "The old neighborhood came out in me, I guess," she tells Jo. Melanie is also from Brooklyn.

Henry thinks the case is closed until Abe shows him Oscar's papers. They reveal his entire company is an elaborate Ponzi scheme. Jo is trying to talk Melanie out of signing her confession when she gets a call that Oliver is being investigated for fraud. Someone made an anonymous call to the SEC. Melanie admits that Oliver was going to pay her $20 million and that, yes, he killed Jason.

Henry, Jo and the FBI descend on Oliver's company to arrest him. Everyone is busy shredding papers and destroying computers. Oliver is missing, but Henry sees the elevator is on P2. He follows his hunch... right into danger, of course. Once again, Henry attempts to stand down a speeding vehicle and Jo comes to his rescue, this time by shooting out the tires of Oliver's car.

Jo declares that Henry is back to his usual self although she's still privately concerned about his seemingly suicidal actions. She hopes working together can make him feel a little better since it certainly does for her. As for the case, Henry tells Marco that Jason intended to return Kevin's investment by using his own money. That's because Marco raised his son right.

In a flashback, we see that Henry eventually supported Abe's decision to go to Vietnam and even saw him off at the bus station. Luckily for Abe, that's when he met fellow draftee Marco, who would later save his life.
