After some fans criticize the lack of female characters in the new season of the hit Netflix series, the streaming giant has now addressed the backlash.

AceShowbiz - Fans were left disappointed after Netflix recently announced additional cast members, who are all male actors, for a second season of "Squid Game". As some fans criticized the lack of female characters in the new season, the streaming giant addressed the backlash on Tuesday, June 20.

In a new statement, Netflix assured fans that there will be more cast members to be announced. "This was the first cast announcement for 'Squid Game' season two," a spokesperson told Insider. "We're excited to share more casting news soon, which will include the leading female characters."

On Saturday, Netflix unveiled new and returning cast members for the sophomore season of its most-watched series ever. The news was shared in a video screened at this year's TUDUM event in Brazil. It was revealed that Lee Jung-Jae (Seong Gi-Huh), Lee Byung-Hun (Front Man), Wi Ha-Jun (Hwang Jun-Ho) and Gong Yoo (Recruiter) will all return for the new season.

They will be joined by newcomers including former K-Pop group ZE:A member Im Siwan, Kang Ha Neul ("Midnight Runners"), Park Sung Hoon ("The Glory") and Yang Dong Geun ("Connect"). There's no word on what characters they will play.

In response to the announcement, fans took to social media to criticize the lack of women in the new casting. "one of the reason why this series became so popular was bcoz of the female characters and u're telling me all main characters are MEN???" a fan fumed.

"the way women carried season 1 but now 99% is men like seriously where tf the women," someone else echoed the sentiment. Another fan tweeted, "This is an amazing cast??? But kinda wild not a single woman is featured." Another comment, meanwhile, read, "This is an amazing cast??? But kinda wild not a single woman is featured."
