The reboot of the Emmy-winning cop drama series will revolve around Detective Sipowicz's son as he strives to earn his detective shield while investigating his father's murder.

AceShowbiz - ABC is breathing life to its iconic police drama, 'NYPD Blue'. The commercial TV network confirms on Wednesday, October 17 that a pilot-production commitment has been bestowed upon the sequel of the Steven Bochco and David Milch-created series.

This reboot will revolve around Theo, the son of detective Andy Sipowicz with Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Costas, as he strives to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father's murder. Deadline Hollywood further details that the young Sipowicz will be sharing his father's hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted traits.

Sadly, fans won't see the return of Dennis Franz as Andy to the small screen. The 73-year-old actor, who won three Emmy Awards for the role, told Deadline, "I did receive a call, and I'm flattered but not interested." He added, "NYPD Blue was a high point in my life and career, and I think of it so fondly. I wish them all well and much success."

Original series writers Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton have signed on to write the script for the pilot episode. The two will also executive produce the new show with Jesse Bocho, the son of co-creator Steven. Jesse has additionally taken on the role of director, while Dayna Bochco, Steven's widow, will produce.

"NYPD Blue" itself was debuted in September 1993, and ran for 12 seasons on ABC. Its final episode was aired in March 2005. Being ABC's longest-running primetime drama, before it was taken over by "Grey's Anatomy" in 2016, the show rounded up 84 nominations from the Emmy Awards over its run. It managed to snag 20 accolades from the awards show which included best drama series in 1995. It has also scored Golden Globes for best drama series in 1994.

Aside from Dennis Franz, the cast ensemble throughout 12 seasons consisted of David Caruso, Jimmy Smits, James McDaniel, Amy Brenneman, Sharon Lawrence, Kim Delaney, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Nicholas Turturro and many others. It is still unclear whether any of the original stars will make a return or cameo appearance on the sequel.
