Music

From turning the stage into personal sex club to setting piano on fire, these musicians bring something unique for their performances at the award-giving show.

AceShowbiz - American Music Awards have always given musicians an opportunity to go all out for their performance. Pink was the perfect example of that. Continuing to challenge herself, the 39-year-old singer wowed both audience and viewers at home with her outlandish performance at the award-giving show last year.

Pink used the wall of JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Los Angeles as the stage of her "Beautiful Trauma" performance. While hanging by wires off the hotel building, the pop superstar expertly performed executed choreography and sang lines of the song without missing a single note. Guests inside the hotel were seen waving out during her performance.

Many people were amazed by her performance that night, with one Twitter user saying, "One of the most incredible performances of our lifetime. Thank you for being one of the greatest performers of our generation! This is why you are my favorite artist of all time!"

While Pink's performance was the highlight of the 2017 American Music Awards, the event has given plenty of performances to be talked about in the years prior. Without further ado, let's take a look at other outlandish performances in the event's history.

1. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus almost broke the internet when she performed her hit "Wrecking Ball" at the 2013 American Music Awards. While people expected that she would do some twerking like what she did during her performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, they were treated to a cat-themed performance instead.

The former Disney darling's kitty-adorned two piece outfit was an odd choice for the heartbreaking song, let alone the footage of a giant cute animated cat which was shown on the big screen behind her. The cat was lip syncing to the song and crying diamond tears, seemingly to express the sad lyrics.

2. Twenty One Pilots

People were wondering why Tyler Joseph wore a mask when Twenty One Pilots took the stage at the 2016 American Music Awards. Many confused internet user asked similar questions such as, "Why did he wear mask?" and "I don't understand why he wore mask."

During the set itself, he belted out a mashup of "Blurryface" single "Stressed Out" and "Suicide Squad" soundtrack "Heathens". Towards the end of the performance, Tyler went to back side of the stage before leaping off his piano as explosions shot off him.

3. Rihanna

Rihanna defied the ordinary when she opened the 2010 AMAs. Instead of taking the center stage, the songstress kicked off her performance by singing a snippet of "Love the Way You Lie" atop a tree before jumping off her perch in spectacular fashion.

After making the audience wait for awhile, Rihanna emerged from a plume of fog wearing a crop top and black hot pants. Joined by her backup dancers, she then launched into her hit "What's My Name?" before closing out her performance by singing "Only Girl in the World".

4. Lady GaGa

It won't be a Lady GaGa performance if she doesn't bring something unique to it. Back in 2009, GaGa was all about theatrics and her performance at the American Music Awards was no different. Belting out a rendition of "Bad Romance", the pop star dressed in a skeletal, flesh toned outfit and was accompanied with several backup dancers who wore similar outfits.

As if her outfit was not strange enough, she then picked up a microphone stand and smashed a glass box with her piano in it. Once she sat in front of the piano to sing "Speechless", her piano erupted in flames. She then smashed a bottle of vodka as she continued to sing.

5. Lorde

Who will want to be trapped inside a box while performing at an award show? Well, Lorde did it just fine when she took the stage at the 2014 American Music Awards. She kicked off her rendition of "Yellow Flicker Beat" inside a box, smearing her lipstick and bouncing up and down without minding the camera.

The box was eventually lifted when the Australian singer hit the chorus, dancing crazily as people around her stood still. Her performance wowed the audience members, including Taylor Swift who was captured on camera freaking out. Many have also dubbed her performance at the event "iconic."

6. Coldplay

Coldplay wanted to make their first performance at the AMAs in seven years one to remember, so they brought along some special friends onstage. Chris Martin sang "Adventure of a Lifetime" while jumping around along with hallucinogenic projections behind him.

Towards the end of their rendition, he was joined by a group of dancers in gorilla costumes, which confused some as it had nothing to do with the song's theme and lyrics. Further supporting the euphoric atmosphere, gigantic balloons were thrown around the audience.

7. Adam Lambert

It's safe to say that Adam Lambert's performance at the 2009 AMAs was one of the most shocking sets in the event's history. When he took the stage to perform "For Your Entertainment", audience at Nokia Theater in Los Angeles as well as viewers at home were left speechless.

Joined by a scantily clad dancers writhing in S&M getups, the "American Idol" alum turned the stage into his own personal sex club. He dragged a female dancer across the floor by her leg in addition to leading two men by a leash. As if it was not shocking enough, he pulled a male dancer's head into his crotch before grabbing one of his backing musicians by the neck and gave him an open-mouthed kiss.

8. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift went all out when she was tapped as the opener for the 2014 AMAs. She kicked off her rendition of "Blank Space" by enjoying a dinner with her lover on the air. When she finally made it to the ground and poisoned her lover with an apple, she set her rose on fire before playing with it.

That was not the last time the audience saw her playing with fire during the performance. Towards the end of her set, flames erupted behind her as she continued singing. She received a loud cheer from the crowd after she finished performing.

For this year's AMAs, the former country singer will once again hit the stage to open the annual award-giving show. Since it will mark her return to AMAs stage after four years, will she throw a jaw-dropping act to top her 2014 performance or will she take a safe route? It will be unveiled at the live ceremony which takes place on Tuesday, October 9.
