In addition, the third episode of 'This Is Us' season 3 sees Randall facing double heartbreak.

AceShowbiz - The final scene of "This Is Us" season 3 premiere hinted that something was off with Toby (Chriss Sullivan) and Kate (Chrissy Metz)'s relationship. Much to fans' dismay, the show's episode 3 "A Philadelphia Story", which aired on Tuesday, October 2, further fueled the speculation in a flash-forwarded scene.

The scene might reveal that the pair, who tied the knot in season 2 finale, are divorced in the future. In the previous episode, old Toby was seen not sporting his wedding ring. In addition, he seemed hesitant when Randall (Sterling K. Brown) asked him to meet Kate. "I'm not coming down, she doesn't want to see me," Toby told Randall.

In addition to the heart-breaking revalation about Kate and Toby's possible fate, "A Philadephia Story" highlighted the Pearson siblings following the death of his dad Jack (Milo Ventimiglia). This episode was particularly tough for Randall, who was seen mourning double deaths; Jack's in the past and his biological father William's (Ron Cephas Jones) in the present-day.

Randall was also seen making a heartbreaking, pained decision as a college-bound teenager as he grappled again with issues of his identity and background as a transracial adoptee. He got rejected by both sides as Chichi (Yetide Badaki) told him that he's not one of them, while Kate said that she was the only one in the family who would carry on the legacy of Jack.

Of the double bruising blows, showrunner Elizabeth Berger reveals that both comments have equally big impact on Randal. "So much of Randall’s life is this struggle to come to terms with his own identity. And I think he feels so connected to his black identity. He feels so connected to his adoptive parents and his family, but to always feel like you’re moving between worlds causes a lot of internal conflict," she explains.

When asked about William's return to the show, showrunner Isaac Aptaker shares, "So in terms of time with William, we really jump all around and find tons of different ways to use him, both in this building world and also once he's met our Pearsons."

"This Is Us" season 3 airs on Tuesdays at 9 P.M. on NBC.
