The Captain America depicter will star on and produce the new crime drama, which has received a straight-to-series order at Apple.

AceShowbiz - Chris Evans is heading back to small screen. The actor, best known for playing Captain America in Marvel's movies, is set to headline and executive producer new crime drama "Defending Jacob", which has been ordered straight-to-series at Apple.

The series is based on William Landay's 2012 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. The story revolves around Andy Barber, an assistant district attorney whose 14-year-old son is accused of murder. The project is billed as a limited series and will consist of eight episodes.

Mark Bomback (the "Planet of the Apes" trilogy) created the TV series and wrote the script. He will also serve as executive producer and showrunner. Paramount Television and Anonymous Content will produce the series, with Rosalie Swedlin and Adam Shulman executive producing for Anonymous Content. Academy Award-nominee Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game", "Counterpart", "Jack Ryan") will executive produce and direct the series.

Other details, such as other cast members and premiere date, are yet to be revealed.

The project marks Evans' first regular TV role in nearly two decades. His only other regular TV role was on FOX's miniseries "Opposite Sex" back in 2000. He has also guest starred on "The Fugitive" (2000), "Boston Public" (2001) and lent his voice for an episode of "Robot Chicken" in 2008.

The 37-year-old hunk will reprise his role as Captain America in the yet-untitled "Avengers 4", which is slated for release on May 3, 2019 in the U.S. His other notable roles include Johnny Storm / Human Torch in 2005's "Fantastic Four" and Lucas Lee in 2010's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".

It is widely believed that the upcoming Avengers movie will mark Evans' last appearance as Captain America. He is also set to star in post-World War II drama "The Devil All the Time", which will reunite with his "Avengers: Infinity War" co-star Tom Holland.
