AceShowbiz - Avril Lavigne has finally made her return to the music industry with a more mature side. The Canadian songstress unleashed her much-anticipated first song in five years, "Head Above Water", on Tuesday, September 19 as promised.

The song finds Avril opening up about her battle with Lyme disease, which is so debilitating that she doesn't think she will live through it. She could be heard passionately wishing to God to keep her alive when she doesn't think she has the strength to keep breathing. "God, keep my head above water/ Don't let me drown, it gets harder," she sings over piano melody. "Don't let me drown, drown, drown."

"Head Above Water" is the first taste of Avril's forthcoming album, which still doesn't have a title or a release date. The song also serves to promote her Avril Lavigne Foundation, which focuses on bringing awareness to Lyme disease.

In a statement announcing the song, Avril shared that she wrote the song when she was convinced she was going to succumb to her illness. Recalling writing the song "during one of the scariest moments" of her life, she said, "I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I feel like I was going under the water and I just needed to come up for air."

"Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water," the "Complicated" hitmaker continued. "I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story." Concluding her statement, she hoped her new music could send support for others who were battling the disease.

Avril recently teased that she was filming a music video, though she didn't explicitly stated what music video she was filming. There's a possibility a video for "Head Above Water" will be released soon.
