A half-Korean and half-Italian actor, Alex Landi, is tapped to play surgeon Nico Kim in the upcoming season.

AceShowbiz - "Grey's Anatomy" has added a newcomer for its upcoming season 15. Half-Korean and half-Italian actor Alex Landi has been tapped to play first gay male surgeon Dr. Nico Kim on the Golden Globe-winning series, as TVLine reported.

The TV network has also confirmed the casting and Landi will join the other cast members this fall. However, it is unknown how long Landi will stay on the show as ABC refuses to reveal additional details about his character. The New York-born actor previously starred on CBS' drama "Bull".

This is not the first time "Grey's Anatomy" features LGBT characters since there were also bisexual Callie Torres and lesbian Arizona Robbins, who were portrayed by Sara Ramirez and Jessica Capshaw respectively. The two didn't stay on the show though as Ramirez left the show in 2016 after playing her character for ten years. "Taking a step back from the industry has allowed me to take space and get even more clear about things that are important to me," the 43-year-old actress explained her reason.

Capshaw, meanwhile, left after the end of the fourteenth season. She stated that she was sad that she had to let go of her character on the series. "I am grateful that I have gotten to bring her to life and for the life that she has brought to me. I am sad to see her go, but I am consoled by the idea that she will continue to live on and on in all of our consciences and our imaginations," she told PEOPLE.

Camilla Luddington stated that she hoped fans of the series would accept the new storylines with new characters following Capshaw's departure. "I hope the fans can embrace other storylines and other characters that we bring on, and 'Grey's [Anatomy]' continues to be something fun for them to watch," she said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The Jo Wilson depicter continued to explain, "Whenever you're going to be saying goodbye to beloved characters, the fandom will always be upset, but honestly, what that shows to me is a passion and they love them so much, and the writers did an amazing job because people are so invested in them. And that's why they feel that way." Luddington also claimed that she was excited to see how the series' upcoming season would go.

Season 15 of "Grey's Anatomy" is set to premiere on September 27 at 8 P.M. on ABC.
