AceShowbiz - Marvel Studios has finally unveiled the first official photos of "Captain Marvel". Making their way out via Entertainment Weekly, one of the photos features Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in her iconic blue-and-red costume.
The superhero shows her superpower which appears to be emitted from her hands on the cover of the magazine's latest issue. Another photo sees Carol as an Air Force pilot, while Carol's old friend, Maria "Photon" Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), is pictured separately. Maria is a top-notch Air Force pilot and also a single mother to a young daughter.
Besides the blue-and-red costume, Carol is seen sporting the black-and-green costume that was spotted on the set back in January. She's seen being joined by other Starforce members, who wear the same uniforms, in the picture.
Starforce is led by Jude Law's enigmatic commander, who views Carol as a mentee and pet project. "These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control," Law says. "That's a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one's emotions and to use your powers wisely."
In another image, Law is seen filming a scene with Lee Pace, who reprises his "Guardians of the Galaxy" role as Ronan the Accuser. In "Guardians", Ronan is an outcast with extremist views, but in the upcoming "Captain Marvel", he's still a high-ranking member of Kree society.
But the biggest villain in the movie is the Skrulls. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader, Talos. One picture sees the green-skinned baddies emerging from water in the beach. One of their abilities is to shape-shift, allowing Talos to go undercover as a human working within S.H.I.E.L.D.
There's also a look at Carol in her '90s civilian outfit and Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury. Marvel fans will be quick to notice that Nick looks different without his signature eyepatch. In the film, he's younger than he's in any other Marvel films and is a lowly S.H.I.E.L.D. desk jockey.
Carol Danvers was an accomplished Air Force pilot before she left her earthly life behind to join the elite military team Starforce on the Kree planet of Hala. The members also include Djimon Hounsou's Korath (from "Guardians") and Gemma Chan's Minn-Erva. Carol is back on Earth when the Skrulls plan an invasion of Earth.
Larson describes her character, "She can't help but be herself. She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face. She's also quick to jump to things, which makes her amazing in battle because she's the first one out there and doesn't always wait for orders. But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw."
Co-director Anna Boden adds, "This is not a superhero who’s perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection. But what makes her special is just how human she is. She's funny, but doesn't always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesn't always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity - and all of its messiness."
Also co-directed by Ryan Fleck, "Captain Marvel" additionally stars Annette Bening in an undisclosed role and Clark Gregg who reprises his role as Agent Coulson. Its script is written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The movie is set for a March 8, 2019 release in the United States.
