AceShowbiz - Kevin Spacey's presidential character in Netflix drama House of Cards has been killed off.

The 59-year-old Oscar winner was fired from the series last year (17), after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment against him emerged, and his TV wife, Robin Wright, stepped up to save the final season of the show, in which Spacey played scheming U.S. president Frank Underwood.

At the end of the last season of the drama, his wife Claire, played by Wright, became the president after her husband is forced to step down after becoming embroiled in a murder investigation, and in a new teaser for the upcoming sixth season, it appears Spacey's character is dead - in the promo, Claire is seen standing over her husband's grave while talking to him.

"I'll tell you this though, Francis, when they bury me, it won't be in my backyard," Wright's character says. "And when they pay their respects, they'll have to wait in line."

The allegations against Spacey emerged during filming of the sixth season of House of Cards and the show was temporarily put on hold as producers and network bosses decided what to do about the scandal.

Wright previously revealed the series was close to being cancelled but she pushed for it to continue, so the cast, crew and writers could wrap up the series properly - and everyone could keep their jobs.

"I believed we should finish," she told Net-A-Porter magazine. "I believed we should honour our commitment. To the people that loved the show."

"They (media) printed that it was 'only' 600 people out of work, but if you include security, cops, shooting on location in Baltimore, everything, 2,500 people would have been out of a job," she added. "And that's not fair - to take that security away from those people... They didn't do anything (wrong)."
