The 'Justice League' actor will portray the main protagonist who is a monster hunter and possesses supernatural abilities.

AceShowbiz - Henry Cavill has landed the lead role on Netflix's upcoming fantasy drama series "The Witcher". The series will mark Cavill's return to small screen since 2010 when he starred on Showtime's historical drama "The Tudors". On "The Witcher", which is based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novel series of the same name, the British actor is set to play main protagonist Geralt of Rivia.

According to the books, Geralt is a monster hunter, or a witcher, who possesses supernatural abilities. The story revolves around Geralt's journey as he struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

There's no further information about Cavill's character from Netflix, but executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown described characters in the novel series as original and funny. " 'The Witcher' stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world," they said. "The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can't wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling."

"There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today's challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover," producer Jarek Sawko added. "It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts."

Meanwhile, the series' creator, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, previously stated on Twitter that the production would be done as quickly as possible. "We're moving quickly ahead with everything like, my head is spinning around Exorcist-style, except with enthusiasm, not evil possession, but one thing is certain: quality comes before speed," she wrote.

Netflix has yet to announce the series' premiere date.
